WASHINGTON: Ex-US vice president Mike Pence has formally launched his presidential drive by framing the Republican nomination as a choice between former President Donald Trump and the Constitution, US media reported on Wednesday. Mike Pence argued that his former boss’s bid to upturn the last polls should prevent him from returning in the 2024 elections.

Pence told his supporters in Ankeny, Iowa, “As I’ve said several times, on that critical day, Trump’s words were irresponsible and threatened my family and everyone at the Capitol,”.

He said, “The people deserve to know that on that day, Trump also demanded that I select between him (Trump) and the Constitution. Now electorates will be faced with the same option. I took the Constitution, and I always will.”

Mike Pence is the first modern vice president to contest his old boss for his party’s nomination. The ex-Vice President assaulted Donald Trump for supporting conservative policies. Pence, Chris Christie, Ron DeSantis, and Nikki Haley, are also in the race for the White House.

Mike Pence also criticized President Joe Biden and said that he (Biden) has weakened the US at local and global levels.

Polls indicate former President Trump as the crushing early frontrunner, frequently posting leads on DeSantis in excess of 30 points, AFP reported.
