ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal on Thursday directed the concerned authorities to ensure the timely completion of the Jinnah Medical Complex in the country’s capital, Islamabad.

Presiding over a review meeting, Ahsan Iqbal stated that once completed, the medical complex would revolutionise healthcare standards in Islamabad.

The project, launched by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif with a groundbreaking ceremony in July this year, is expected to be completed within three years at an estimated cost of Rs. 120 billion.

The Jinnah Medical Complex will feature a Center of Excellence, Diagnostic and Treatment Podium, student housing, academic and research towers, an auditorium, a mosque, an emergency department, and a hotel for medical tourism.

During the meeting, attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Health, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) and others, the minister emphasised the importance of completing the project within the stipulated timeframe.

Ahsan Iqbal also directed that the project be executed under the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) model for greater efficiency and transparency, rather than through regular budgeting.

For the fiscal year 2024-2025, the government has allocated Rs. 5 billion from the Public Sector Development Program (PSDP) to initiate the project.

The CDA has earmarked 200 kanals of commercial land in Sector H-16 for the complex, which is strategically located near the airport and national highways, making it ideal for regional and international medical tourism.

A steering committee has been established to monitor the project’s progress and ensure all milestones are met.

To enhance the project’s success, Iqbal instructed that vice chancellors from two leading Pakistani medical universities be involved in the planning process.
