Monsoon Disasters Claim 195 Lives in Nepal

KATHMANDU: At least 195 people have lost their lives in monsoon-related disasters over the past two and a half months in Nepal.

According to the Nepal Police Headquarters, landslides triggered by heavy rain and floods have injured 247 other individuals since the monsoon started on June 10.

Gandaki Province registered the highest number of deaths at 56, followed by Bagmati Province at 39. Lumbini Province witnessed 37 fatalities, Koshi 27, Sudurpaschim 15, Karnali 13, and Madhesh Province 8. Among those killed in Bagmati, three were from Kathmandu.

The natural calamity also resulted in 247 injuries, with the highest number reported in Karnali Province (59). As many as 47 people were wounded in Gandaki Province, 38 in Koshi, and 38 in Bagmati (including 11 in Kathmandu).

The police said overall, 34 people were injured in Sudurpaschim Province, 19 in Lumbini, and 12 in Madhesh. Also, 49 people went missing, and at least 5,883 families were displaced by the disasters.

Among the missing, 41 are from Bagmati Province, followed by two each from Koshi and Gandaki provinces, and one each from Karnali, Lumbini, Madhesh and Sudurpaschim provinces.
