ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Saturday said a fresh system of monsoon rains was expected to enter the South Asian country, which may trigger heavy rainfall and urban floods in Northern and southern parts.
According to PDMA, monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea are expected to affect the upper regions of the country from July 27th to July 31st.
The NDMA cautioned that this weather system could lead to rainfall that may trigger landslides, mudslides, or falling boulders, potentially disrupting roads in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Galiyat, Murree, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) during this period.
In addition, isolated heavy showers are anticipated in various cities across Sindh and Balochistan from July 29 to July 31.
The advisory highlighted that rainfall could cause flash flooding in local nullahs, and hill torrents may develop in the Sulaiman and Kirthar Ranges, as well as in DG Khan and Rajanpur areas.
The NDMA warned that flash floods can occur suddenly, posing significant risks to safety. The public is advised to avoid floodwaters and seek refuge in safe areas away from flood-prone zones.
The advisory stressed that even a small amount of moving water can be dangerous, with six inches being enough to knock someone off their feet and one foot capable of sweeping away a vehicle. It is also advised to avoid crossing bridges during floods and to stay away from weak structures.
In case of heavy rain, the authority recommends seeking shelter in secure places like schools, government buildings, or other sturdy structures.
Earlier this week, the NDMA’s Emergency Operation Centre had also advised the public to take precautions to prevent the impacts of potential flooding and landslides and to be aware of rising water levels in streams and rivers.
