ISLAMABAD: By successfully enforcing their zero-accident policy in the foggy weather of 2022–2023, the National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP) have accomplished a remarkable accomplishment.

According to a statement made by an NHMP representative here on Friday, using contemporary technology and responding quickly to incidents were crucial to ensuring that passengers traveled safely.

Accidents on highways in foggy weather

Twenty-three pileup incidents happened in 12 years on highways under dense fog. Nine incidents occurred in the previous two years, causing 146 injuries and 29 fatalities. These incidents caused a monetary loss of over one crore rupees and destroyed 176 vehicles.

Under the direction of IG Khalid Mahmood, the NHMP thoroughly investigated the numerous element influencing accidents during foggy conditions.

Vehicles stranded in the fog could be safely removed thanks to the deployment of sophisticated thermal cameras. Daily briefings for drivers were held at toll booths, and a fog journey planner was also made available for their convenience.

The NHMP used 130 helplines, electronic and social media, FM-95 radio, and other platforms to inform the public about the timely opening and closing of the motorways to safeguard the safety of travelers further.

The best approach employed by IG Khalid Mahmood has enhanced travelers’ experiences in general.
