JAKARTA: Indonesia’s Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki erupted again on Wednesday, sending ash clouds two kilometers above its peak.
Authorities elevated the volcano’s alert status to the highest level, prompting an evacuation order for nearby residents on Flores Island. Local communities are urged to evacuate immediately to safe points, with two temporary shelters accommodating around 5,000 people.
The Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG) raised the alert level to 4 and imposed an exclusion zone of four to five kilometers.
Residents are warned of potential flooding as volcanic mudflows may reach rivers. Protective masks are advised to prevent respiratory hazards from volcanic ash.
Indonesia, situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire, has nearly 130 volcanoes, with heightened alert levels observed at Mount Marapi on Sumatra island following a recent eruption that claimed lives.
