SYDNEY: Andy Murray, a three-time Grand Slam champion, responded defiantly to suggestions that continuing his career could tarnish his legacy, following his third consecutive first-round exit at the age of 36.

Despite breathing new life into his career with hip-resurfacing surgery in 2019, Murray has faced challenges in reaching the latter stages of major tournaments, failing to advance beyond the third round since Wimbledon in 2017.

Despite recent defeats at Brisbane and Melbourne Park, Murray’s loss to Benoit Paire in Montpellier prompted a question from a BBC reporter about the potential damage to his legacy. Murray dismissed the notion, declaring on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter: “Tarnishing my legacy? Do me a favour.”

“I am in a terrible moment right now I’ll give you that. “Most people would quit and give up in my situation right now. But I am not most people and my mind works differently,” the former world number one and two-time Olympic champion added.
