ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Special Assistant on Human Rights and Women Empowerment, Mushaal Hussain Mallick, has appealed to the global community to ensure the safety of her imprisoned husband, Yasin Malik, who faces serious threats while detained in the notorious Tihar jail.

Speaking at a seminar on the human rights situation in the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) in Oslo, Mushaal stressed the dire human rights violations suffered by her family, which has been divided by their peaceful struggle for the right to self-determination in IIOJK.

The seminar was co-hosted by Parliament’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Standing Committee Member, Dag-Inge Ulestein, and President of the Foundation Dialogue for Peace, Aamir Javed Sheikh.

Recalling the challenges her family has faced, Mushaal shared, “We only spent one birthday together back in 2014, and during our 14-year-long marriage, we’ve had just 60 days together. I last spoke to my husband in February 2019, making my life feel like a tragic story.”

Mushaal Mallick Highlights Yasin Malik’s Kashmir Struggle

As the chief guest at the event, Mushaal emphasized Yasin Malik’s influential role in the Kashmir freedom movement, which led the Narendra Modi-led government to unlawfully detain him by fabricating politically motivated charges to break his resolve. Yasin Malik refuses to waver from his principled stance on the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination.

Mushaal revealed that Yasin Malik had been deprived of his legal and fundamental rights, including access to a fair trial, and he was even denied essential life-saving medications despite his rapidly declining health.

Expressing concern about the potential judicial murder of Yasin Malik ahead of India’s general elections, Mushaal urged the world’s powers, UN bodies, and human rights organizations to intervene and secure his early and safe release from unlawful Indian custody.

Mushaal, SAPM on Human Rights and Women Empowerment, condemned the Indian government’s oppressive actions in the valley, which has been transformed into a battleground, suppressing dissenting voices through state terrorism.

She called on the international community and the UN Security Council to play their part in ending the ongoing massacres and genocidal acts in the valley. She also urged a lasting solution to the decades-old problems, in line with the aspirations of the people of the occupied valley and UN resolutions.

Mushaal warned that the unresolved Kashmir issue continues to pose a significant threat to regional peace. Urgent and decisive measures are needed to find a durable and lasting solution to the Kashmir conflict.
