Muslim Aid Pakistan Completes ‘Building Resilience’ Project in Balochistan

ISLAMABAD: Muslim Aid Pakistan has successfully concluded its “Building Resilience by Strengthening Communities – II Project,” benefiting 12,246 direct and 15,453 indirect people.

The closing ceremony, held in Islamabad attended by Sherry Rehman, Chairperson of the Senate Standing Committee for Climate Change, Senate of Pakistan, as the chief guest.

The event was attended by senior management from Muslim Aid Pakistan, representatives from NDRMF, Asian Development Bank, NDMA, PDMAs, national and international humanitarian organizations, philanthropists, civil society, academia, and media representatives.

Addressing the ceremony, Amanullah Rind, Director of Planning at PDMA Balochistan, emphasized the critical role of community strengthening in enhancing resilience against natural disasters.

He underscored the importance of national and international collaborations to advance disaster risk reduction (DRR) amidst Pakistan’s evolving climate challenges.

Dr. Asif Iqbal, Country Director of Muslim Aid Pakistan, expressed gratitude to ADB and NDRMF for their financial support. He praised the dedication of Muslim Aid workers in successfully implementing the project, which focused on rebuilding and rehabilitating communities in Killa Saifullah, Loralai, and Chagai districts of Balochistan. Dr. Iqbal highlighted the significance of collaborative efforts to strengthen Pakistan’s resilience in vulnerable areas.

The project achieved significant milestones, including the construction of 20 flood protection walls and 6 water reservoirs in Killa Saifullah, 7 flood protection walls and 4 water reservoirs in Chagai, and 4 flood protection walls in Loralai.

Furthermore, it established 80 village disaster risk management committees, 50 School-Based Disaster Risk Management Committees, and 16 Union Council-Based Disaster Risk Management Committees in Killa Saifullah and Chagai.

The closing ceremony also featured a panel discussion titled “Significance of DRR in the Emerging Context of Climate Change in Pakistan,” exploring strategies to promote disaster risk reduction and enhance resilience in the country.
