SEOUL: Amid escalating tensions and concerns over North Korea’s nuclear weapons threats, there is a heightened possibility that the country may conduct a test launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) this month.

South Korea’s deputy national security adviser, Kim Tae-hyo, expressed this concern ahead of discussions with United States officials on strategies to address North Korea’s nuclear capabilities.

Kim Tae-hyo, arriving in Washington for the second round of the Nuclear Consultative Group (NCG) talks, emphasized the focus on North Korea’s ballistic missiles in Washington’s “extended deterrence” strategy. He stated, “Extended deterrence is about finding a way to put down (a nuclear attack) early and decisively, and now, in December, I believe there’s a possibility of an ICBM launch by North Korea.”

The threat posed by North Korea’s ballistic missiles is not solely determined by their range; rather, their capability to carry a nuclear warhead makes them a significant concern. North Korea has demonstrated the development and testing of ballistic missiles with varying ranges, capable of reaching targets in South Korea, Japan, and even the mainland United States.

Under President Yoon Suk Yeol, South Korea has intensified efforts to enhance its defenses against North Korea. This strategy involves close coordination with the United States, focusing on the potential use of US strategic military assets, including nuclear weapons, in the event of a conflict.

In addition, Kim Tae-hyo disclosed that a proposed real-time data-sharing program on North Korean missiles among South Korea, Japan, and the United States is in its final stages of completion, with a formal announcement expected soon.

The last North Korean test of a long-range ballistic missile in July raised concerns globally. Analysts interpreted the launch as a successful test of a solid-fuel ICBM, reaching an altitude of 6,648 km before dropping into the sea east of the Korean Peninsula.

As diplomatic discussions unfold, the international community closely monitors North Korea’s actions, recognizing the potential implications for regional and global security.
