NEW YORK, USA: Abdi Nageeye of the Netherlands and Kenya’s Sheila Chepkirui emerged as victors in the 2023 New York City Marathon, each deploying strategic surges in the final mile to secure their first titles. Nageeye pulled away from last year’s winner, Evans Chebet, clinching victory in 2:07:39, just six seconds ahead. It marked a historic win for Nageeye, the first Dutch runner to win the NYC men’s race. Reflecting on his race strategy, he shared, “Today was two things: survive that race, and my race is after 36 kilometers.”
Chepkirui, competing in New York for the first time, used a powerful kick to outpace defending champion Hellen Obiri, finishing in 2:24:35. Her victory halted Obiri’s bid to become the first repeat champion since Mary Keitany’s streak from 2014 to 2016. Tamirat Tola, last year’s men’s champion, faced challenges, ultimately finishing fourth due to muscle strain at the 33-kilometer mark.
American Daniel Romanchuk broke three-time winner Marcel Hug’s winning streak in the men’s wheelchair race, while Susannah Scaroni defended her women’s wheelchair title. The race traversed New York’s five boroughs under ideal conditions, marking a milestone year with over 50,000 participants.
