Namibia’s President Dies: Presidential Office

WINDHOEK: Namibia’s President Hage Geingob has died while receiving treatment at a hospital in Windhoek, presidential office said in a statement.

In a statement Vice-President Nangolo Mbumba announced that President Geingob had died on Sunday morning.  The 82-old President had been diagnosed with cancer and revealed his diagnosis to the public in February.

Earlier, presidential office of Namibia announced that Hage Geingob would be travelling to the United States for medical treatment, but would return to Namibia on 2nd February. Geingob became president of Namibia in 2015 and was serving his final term in office. The late President also underwent an aortic operation in 2023, and in 2014 he disclosed that he had survived prostate cancer.

Namibia is due to hold presidential and parliamentary polls in November. The ruling Swapo party, which has been in power since independence, has chosen Nandi-Ndaitwah as its presidential candidate.

She is presently also Namibia’s deputy prime minister, and will become the country’s first female president if she wins the elections.
