NDMA Conducts National Level Mock Exercises to Cope with Calamities

ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) is conducting two-day national-level mock exercises in continuation of its pre-emptive preparedness and measures to deal with natural calamities and emergencies.

The mock exercises will continue from 4 to 5 March 2024 at the headquarters of the National Disaster Management Authority.

The purpose of the mock exercises is to ensure preparedness for possible emergencies during the spring and early winter. Chairman NDMA Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik opened the inaugural session of the exercise.

In the exercises, the main relevant institutions including Provincial Disaster Management Authorities, State Disaster Management Authority, Gilgit-Baltistan Disaster Management Authority, Emergency Services, Pakistan Meteorological Department, WAPDA, SPARCO, NHA, Armed Forces, Islamabad Administration, Rescue 1122, United Nations Agencies. And the representatives of welfare institutions participated.

During the exercise, all concerned agencies were given an opportunity to review disaster preparedness.

Importance of Exercises

These exercises will also play an important role in increasing the scope of support with international organizations in addition to ensuring the safety of vulnerable areas and dealing with disasters on the part of all concerned institutions.

The importance of effective communication and support among all relevant agencies to deal with natural disasters was also emphasized during the drill.

During the exercises, the participants implemented their strategies and plan to deal with regional and national level disasters.

A variety of natural disasters and emergencies including drought, wildfires, lake outbursts, floods, heat waves, and industrial fires were simulated as part of the exercise.

It is hoped that conducting these mock exercises will help in effective and timely communication as well as collective action among the relevant agencies to deal with natural disasters.
