ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority’s (NDMA) National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC) has issued a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) alert for the mountainous regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan. This warning comes in response to rising temperatures and expected heavy rainfall between July 17 and 23, which may trigger dangerous GLOF events.

The NEOC has warned that the combination of melting glaciers and intense rainfall could lead to increased water levels in local rivers and streams. This poses a heightened risk of landslides and flash flooding.

In response, the NDMA has instructed the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the Gilgit-Baltistan Disaster Management Authority (GBDMA) to coordinate closely with relevant departments. These agencies have been directed to undertake necessary preparations and implement emergency response measures to mitigate the potential impact of the GLOF events.

Authorities have been urged to alert local communities, tourists, and travelers in at-risk areas to the impending danger and advise them to avoid unnecessary travel. Additionally, the NDMA has emphasized the importance of conducting mock drills in vulnerable areas to ensure the timely evacuation and safety of residents.

To aid in disseminating timely alerts, advisories, and safety guidelines, the NDMA has launched the Pak NDMA Disaster Alert application. This app, available on both the Google Play Store and iOS App Store, is designed to keep the public informed and prepared for emergency situations.
