ISLAMABAD: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has approved a rise of Rs1.15 per unit in electricity tariffs, applicable to all power distribution companies.

As per the notification issued by NEPRA, the increase is approved in the context of the monthly fuel adjustment for the first quarter of the current financial year. Consumers will witness this hike reflected in their bills from January to March 2024.

The adjustment in electricity tariffs is anticipated to impose an additional financial burden of Rs22.297 billion on power consumers. This increase is applicable to all consumer categories, excluding lifeline users and K-Electric consumers.

Earlier today, the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) submitted an application to NEPRA, seeking an increase of Rs4.66 per unit. Acting on behalf of power distribution companies (DISCOs), CPPA has requested NEPRA’s approval for this increase under the Fuel Charges Adjustment (FCA) for November 2023.

According to CPPA’s application, the total electricity generated with various fuels in February 2023 was 7.22 billion units at a basket price of Rs 9.44 per unit.

It’s worth noting that on December 6, NEPRA raised the electricity tariff by Rs3.07 per unit through the monthly fuel adjustment, exempting lifeline and K-Electric consumers from the hike.
