NEPRA Conducts Public Hearing to Decide on Additional Surcharge

ISLAMABAD: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority Thursday conducted a public hearing into motion to impose an additional surcharge on K-Electric consumers and Distribution Companies (DISCOs).

NEPRA Chairman Tauseef H Farooq presided over the hearing, while other members Maqsood Anwar Khan, Amina Ahmed, and Mathar Niaz Rana, were also present. Sindh member Rafique Ahmad Shaikh took part in the proceedings through a video link.

The government sought an additional surcharge of 3.39 rupees per unit on consumers of K-Electric and DISCOs.

Chairman NEPRA on surcharge

The Chairman NEPRA said the authority is neither accepting nor rejecting the surcharge at this moment. He questioned whether the authority has the power to impose a surcharge.

The Power Division officials apprised that there are still pending loans worth 765 billion Power Holding Private Limited rupees. Around over 965 billion rupees in subsidies have been provided to consumers.

A subsidy worth 100 billion rupees was provided to the farmers for electricity provision to them at 7.91 rupees per unit.

Likewise, a subsidy was also provided to the industrial consumers. –APP
