LOS GATOS, United States: Streaming giant Netflix has officially announced a live-action adaptation of Scooby-Doo, making it the first time the beloved animated franchise will be brought in a series format.

The eight-episode show is set to explore the origin story of Mystery Inc., delving into how the iconic group of teenage detectives first came together.

According to the official synopsis, the series will follow Shaggy and Daphne during their final summer at camp, where they discover a lost Great Dane puppy that may have witnessed a supernatural murder.

Alongside Velma, a scientifically-minded local, and the enigmatic new kid Freddy, the group embarks on a thrilling adventure that uncovers dark secrets.

Netflix has described the series as a “modern reimagining” of the classic mystery-solving team and their talking dog. However, casting details have yet to be revealed. The series will be written by Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg and produced under the Midnight Radio banner.

Scooby-Doo has remained a popular cultural icon since its debut in 1969 with Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! on CBS.

The show, created by Joe Ruby and Ken Spears, followed a group of four teenagers—Fred, Daphne, Velma, and Shaggy—and their Great Dane, Scooby-Doo, as they travelled in their Mystery Machine van solving eerie cases, which often involved unmasking villains disguised as supernatural entities.

Over the years, the Scooby-Doo franchise has expanded to include several animated series, TV specials, direct-to-video films, and two live-action movies—Scooby-Doo (2002) and Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed (2004), both starring Matthew Lillard as Shaggy and Sarah Michelle Gellar as Daphne.

During previous live-action adaptations centred on the well-known versions of the characters, Netflix’s new iteration seeks to offer a fresh perspective by delving into their formative years.
