BEIJING, China: At the 6th China International Import Expo (CIIE), which is taking place in Shanghai from November 5 to 10, exhibitors from Pakistan showcase their latest handicrafts, attracting many tourists from China and other countries.

At the expo, the spotlight shines on camel skin lamps, which are crafted from the hides of camels originating from Pakistan. These exquisite lamps captivate visitors with their alluring sheen, intricate patterns, and profound cultural significance.

Having a rich history spanning 900 years and boasting recognition from 25 countries, this intangible art, and craft from Pakistan fetches prices ranging from RMB 50 to 200 at the CIIE.

Habib Ur Rehman, an exhibitor at the event, shared his experience with the China Economic Net (CEN), noting that this marked his second participation in this prestigious expo. “Last time in 2021, our Himalaya Salt Lamps were warmly received by Chinese consumers, which made us realize the huge potential of Pakistani handicrafts in the Chinese market,” Habib said.

The art of crafting camel skin lamps is a unique Pakistani tradition that remains unparalleled worldwide, with only a small group of 30 to 60 artisans dedicated to its production. The intricate process of creating one of these lamps typically spans around ten days, involving various stages such as cleaning, drying, shaping, and meticulously painting the patterns on the lamp.

Habib also emphasized the sustainable use of camel skins, as using them for lamp crafting prevents waste and promotes the cottage industry and intangible art of Pakistan. He expressed his hope that by introducing these lamps to a broader audience, they can inspire more young individuals to join this industry.

More than 20 Pakistani businesses are participating in the 6th China International Import Expo, presenting a wide range of products in one of the busiest marketplaces worldwide.

These products encompass food, carpets, clothing, jade and jewelry, stone and bronze craftsmanship, football, wooden furniture, and more. —APP
