WASHINGTON:  The microblogging platform Twitter has removed the “verified” badge from the US leading daily New York Times’ main account, western media reported on Sunday.

Twitter CEO Elon Musk took over the twitter and made a priority of opening the blue mark,” indicating a reliable social media account, to paying subscribers.

New York Times and Twitter

The New York Times was among media organizations, companies and charities that have already lost their blue mark and were tagged as verified business social media accounts with a gold tick as per Musk’s new mechanism.

The New York Times said in a statement that it would not pay for a verified account but would subscribe for a blue tick only for reporters finding it must for their reporting requirements.

As of Sunday, the media outfit’s main social media account, with nearly 55 million followers, has lost its gold mark, though affiliate accounts retained the ticks.

Many media organizations and journalists who also announced that they would not pay for Twitter Blue ticks, including basketball star LeBron James, have retained gold or blue marks on their social media accounts.

However, on Sunday, Elon Musk criticized the New York Times and said that the real tragedy of New York Times is that their propaganda is not even interesting.
