Niger Military Government Claims Deposed President Tried to Escape

NIAMEY: Niger’s military government has claimed that it had foiled an attempt by deposed President Mohamed Bazoum to escape their custody, Western media reported on Thursday.

The military regime’s spokesperson Amadou Abdramane stated on state television, the former president Mohamed Bazoum and his family, his staff made an attempt to escape from his place of detention.

Amadou Abdramane that the bid failed and “the key actors and some of the assistants” had been apprehended. He claimed that the escape plan had involved the former President at first getting to a hideout on the outskirts of the country’s capital. The former President and his fellow then planned to shift to Nigeria, the spokesperson maintained. He condemned Bazoum’s “irresponsible attitude”.

Since his government was toppled by the army generals on July 26, deposed President Bazoum has denied to quit. Bazoum has been held at his house in the heart of the presidential palace along with his wife and son, AFP reported.

In September Bazoum’s attorney said he filed a petition with a court of the Economic Community of West African States against those who removed the former President.

The army generals who overthrew Bazoum quoted as justification the worsening security situation in the African country due to militant attacks.
