ABUJA, Nigeria: Nigeria has been ranked in Tier 3 of the Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI) 2024, released by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

The GCI categorizes countries into five tiers, with Tier 1 representing the highest cybersecurity commitment. Nigeria, placed in Tier 3, is among 105 countries that are expanding their digital infrastructure but still developing comprehensive cybersecurity frameworks.

The report highlights Nigeria’s progress in digital services and connectivity but points out the need for further efforts to establish robust cybersecurity measures. It also notes a “cyber capacity gap” in skills, staffing, and funding, while acknowledging significant improvements in the country’s cybersecurity capabilities.

ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin emphasized the importance of building trust in the digital world, urging countries to enhance their cybersecurity efforts. The report also revealed that many least developed countries have made strides in cybersecurity but still require support to advance further.

The ITU hopes the progress highlighted in the report will motivate countries like Nigeria to continue strengthening their cybersecurity systems.
