Nigerian President-elect Extends Hand to Opposition Parties

LAGOS, NIGERIA: Nigerian president-elect Bola Tinubu on Wednesday asked his opposition to “join hands” with him, following a contested poll with opposition political parties looking to challenge a vote they claim was polluted by scam.

The former Lagos governor was declared winner of the presidential elections in Nigeria, securing his life-long ambition of leading Africa’s most populous country. The incumbent, President Muhammadu Buhari, will step down in May following two terms, many Nigerians expressed hope that the vote would escort in a leader able to tackle the growing insecurity, rectify the economy, and ease poverty.

The final results of the election gave Tinubu, candidate of the All-Progressives Congress), 8.8 million votes against 6.9 million for opposition party Peoples Democratic Party candidate Atiku Abubakar.

Similarly, the Labour Party’s Peter Obi obtained 6.1 million votes, confirming his success as a surprise third candidate in the country’s presidential election. The Independent National Electoral Commission of Nigeria confirmed Tinubu as president-elect following he secured the required votes across Nigeria.  However, the presidential election was marked by the slow arrival of online results, angering opposition parties and voters who claimed huge vote rigging.
