MAIDUGURI: As many as 9 people were kidnapped in an attack on Friday by armed men in Nigeria’s northwest Zamfara state, locals said.
Abduction for ransom by armed men is common in northwest Nigeria because of high levels of poverty, the proliferation of illegal firearms and unemployment, Reuters reported. The local police and officials did not immediately react over the development.
Nine People Kidnapped in Nigeria
Locals of Tsohuwar Kasuwa community in Kaura Namoda said the armed men attacked their village in an early morning attack on motorcycles.
“They kidnapped my two kids and they were taken to an unknown location.” Rabe Sarkawa, a local told the media. Rabe Sarkawa said that they are in deep pain after the attack.
Alhaji Sabitu said that their five family members and cattle were taken by the kidnappers. Sabitu added that they could not work due to unrest in the area. As per media reports, deadly clashes also often take place between herders and farmers in the region. Earlier, on Wednesday armed men abducted five female students from a university in Katsina state, police official said.
