NEW DELHI: At least nine workers were killed on Sunday in a blast at Solar Industries India, a factory manufacturing drones and explosives in Nagpur city, Maharashtra state in western India. The explosion occurred in the packing area of the facility, leading to a tragic incident that left several workers injured.

Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed deep sorrow over the incident, stating, “It is very unfortunate that nine people, including six women, died in the explosion at Solar Industries in Nagpur.” The company is known for manufacturing drones and explosives for the defense forces in the country.

The state government has pledged financial assistance, announcing a compensation of $6,000 for each family that lost a loved one in the accident. Meanwhile, an official probe has been initiated to investigate the circumstances surrounding the blast and to determine the cause.

Industrial Disasters Common in India

Industrial disasters are common in India, often attributed to poor planning and inadequate enforcement of safety regulations. In a similar incident last year, 11 people lost their lives in Bihar state due to an explosion in a house where firecrackers were being illegally manufactured. In 2021, a blast at a firecracker factory in Tamil Nadu resulted in the tragic death of 19 individuals.

The latest incident at Solar Industries India underscores the pressing need for stringent safety measures and effective oversight to prevent such disasters and protect the lives of industrial workers across the country.
