ISLAMABAD/TOKYO: Nissan Motor Co. Ltd on Monday increased its electrified vehicle sales goals and said it would increase power train production in the United States (US) as it looks to catch up in a segment dominated by brand new automakers such as Tesla Inc.

The Japan automaker pioneered electric cars with its all-battery-powered Leaf but struggled alongside several legacy automakers in the face of rising competition from nimbler new entrants.

Nissan’s plan on electrified vehicles

It said that Nissan now plans to have electrified vehicles, including its advanced hybrid e-power cars, make up over 55% of world sales by fiscal year 2030, from a previous goal of 50%.

The automaker plans 27 latest electrified cars by this year, 19 of which will be all-battery electric cars, it told in a statement. That compared with its last plan of 23 electrified cars, including 15 all-battery EVs.

In addition to electric cars production at its Smyrna, Tennessee plant, Nissan company plans to build electric power trains at its Decherd plant in the same state to help it meet requirements for the Inflation Reduction Act, Chief Operating Officer Ashwani Gupta said on Monday.

Nissan is confident it would comply with the Act due to the localization starting calendar 2026, Gupta said in an online briefing.
