North Korea Makes Nuclear Arms Status Part of Constitution: Official Media

SEOUL: North Korea’s parliament has enshrined the country’s status as a nuclear arms power in the constitution, official media reported Thursday. According to KCNA, this was stated by South Korean leader Kim Jong Un during a meeting at the State People’s Assembly.

Pyongyang has carried out a record number of arms tests in the current year and its ties with Seoul and Washington are very tense, amid fears that North Korea might conducts its 1st nuclear test since 2017.

A year ago, the assembly approved a law declaring North Korea to be a nuclear arms country and Kim Jong Un stated this status was “permanent.” That new law also permitted for the pre-emptive use of nuclear arms.

Now, the country’s assembly has gone further by specifying that nuclear arms status in the constitution itself.

Kim Jong Un said that it is a historic occasion that provided a powerful political control for remarkably strengthening the national defense competencies.
