WASHINGTON: Recent developments in the Asia-Pacific region have once again drawn attention to the sensitive issue of Taiwan’s sovereignty, as North Korea strongly criticized the United States’ decision to provide an aid package worth up to $345 million to Taiwan.
The move came as Congress authorized up to $1 billion worth of weapons for Taiwan as part of the 2023 budget.
North Korea’s state media, as reported by the official KCNA news agency, quoted Maeng Yong-rim, the director general of the North Korean Foreign Ministry’s Chinese affairs department, who condemned the US aid package to Taiwan. Accusing Washington of fueling tensions in the region and pushing it towards “another ignition point of war,” the North Korean statement deemed the plan a “dangerous political and military provocation” and a “flagrant violation” of the One China principle.
