PYIONGYANG: A North Korean diplomatic delegation, led by Vice Foreign Minister Pak Myong-ho, has embarked on a visit to Mongolia, according to reports from the state Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

The delegation, comprising officials from the Foreign Ministry, departed from Pyongyang on Saturday for Mongolia. Accompanying them to Pyongyang International Airport were officials from the Ministry and Mongolia’s charge d’affairs.

The purpose of the visit appears to be to bolster relations with Mongolia, a traditional ally of North Korea. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Mongolia has maintained its diplomatic presence in Pyongyang.

In January, Mongolia’s new ambassador to North Korea assumed his responsibilities after presenting credentials to Choe Ryong-hae, the vice chairman of the state affairs commission.

This visit marks the first diplomatic exchange between North Korea and Mongolia since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020. The last visit from North Korea to Mongolia occurred in 2019.
