SYDNEY: Australia has included the injured quartet of Pat Cummins, Steve Smith, Glenn Maxwell, and Mitchell Starc in their provisional 15-man squad for the upcoming 50-over cricket World Cup in India.

However, the fitness of these key players remains a concern as they race against time to recover before Australia’s opening game against the hosts in Chennai on October 8.

The final 15-player squad for Australia is scheduled to be confirmed by the International Cricket Council (ICC) by September 28, leaving the selection committee with a challenging decision. Chief selector George Bailey provided an update on the quartet’s progress, expressing optimism about their recovery and potential participation in the crucial tournament warm-up matches.

Cummins, Australia’s captain, is recovering from a fractured hand sustained during his stint in the Indian Premier League (IPL). His return to form is of paramount importance for the Australian team, both as a bowler and leader.

Steve Smith, a batting mainstay for Australia, has been grappling with a wrist injury that has kept him out of action. His ability to anchor the innings and provide stability in the middle order is vital for the team’s chances.

All-rounder Glenn Maxwell has been sidelined due to an ankle injury, and his explosive batting and handy off-spin make him a valuable asset for the Australian squad.

Mitchell Starc, Australia’s premier fast bowler, has been nursing a groin injury. His ability to provide early breakthroughs with the new ball is crucial, and Australia will be keen to have him back in action as soon as possible.

Despite their current setbacks, Bailey expressed confidence that these players could feature in the three One-Day International (ODI) warm-up matches against India scheduled for later this month. These fixtures will serve as an important gauge of their fitness and readiness for the World Cup.
