JEDDAH: The General Secretariat of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has expressed grave concern over the recent construction and inauguration of the “Ram Temple” at the site of the previously demolished Babri Mosque located in the Indian city of Ayodhya, a statement of the OIC said on Tuesday.

It said that in line with the OIC position expressed by the Council of Foreign Ministers in its previous sessions, the General Secretariat condemns these actions aimed at demolishing the Islamic landmarks represented by the Babri Mosque, which has stood tall at the exact location for five centuries.

Pakistan on Monday also condemned the construction and consecration of the ‘Ram Temple’ on the site of the demolished Babri Mosque.

The centuries-old mosque was demolished on December 6, 1992, by a mob of extremists. Deplorably, India’s superior judiciary not only acquitted the criminals responsible for this condemnable act but also allowed the construction of a temple on the site of the demolished mosque.

A temple built on the site of a demolished mosque will remain a blot on the face of India’s democracy for the times to come. Notably, there is a growing list of mosques, including the Shahi Eidgah Mosque in Mathura and the Gyanvapi Mosque in Varanasi, facing a similar threat of desecration and destruction, Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

In Ayodhya Muslims and Hindus have lived in peace, but in the past, due to mobs of outsiders at multiple events, the Muslim community has suffered the loss of life, property, and religious places, stated Muslims’ petition to the police.
