JEDDAH: The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has called an emergency meeting to discuss the current situation in the Republic of Sudan. The OIC meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 3, 2023, at the headquarters of the General Secretariat in Jeddah.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the current Chair of the Islamic Summit, and the OIC Executive Committee have invited member states to attend the meeting.

The OIC Secretary-General, Hissein Brahim Taha, emphasized the importance of the meeting and the concern of member states over the ongoing events in Sudan. He renewed his appeal for a permanent ceasefire in Sudan and called for a return to dialogue to restore stability and security in the country.

The situation in Sudan has been volatile since the military coup that ousted the democratically elected government in 2019. In recent weeks, the country has seen an escalation in violence as clashes between government forces and rebel groups have intensified.

The security situation has been further complicated by the presence of armed militias, which have been accused of perpetrating human rights abuses and fueling ethnic tensions.

OIC to discuss ways to restore peace

The OIC meeting is expected to focus on ways to restore peace and stability in Sudan, including the need for an immediate truce and a return to dialogue. The meeting is also expected to address the humanitarian crisis in the country, where millions of people are facing food insecurity and displacement.

The OIC, which represents 57 member states, has been actively involved in efforts to resolve the crisis in Sudan. The organization has called for an end to violence and for respect for human rights and the rule of law.

The upcoming emergency meeting is expected to provide a platform for member states to discuss the situation in Sudan and to coordinate their efforts to support the country in its time of need.

The OIC meeting comes at a critical time for Sudan, as the country faces a growing humanitarian crisis and an uncertain political future. The outcome of the meeting could have a significant impact on the country’s trajectory, as well as on the stability of the wider region.
