OIC Envoy Vows to Ensure Kashmir Resolution Under UN Mandate

ISLAMABAD: Ambassador Hameed Ajibaiye Opeloyeru, Permanent Observer of the OIC Mission to the UN, has reiterated the Organization of Islamic Cooperation’s (OIC) resolve to ensuring the resolution of the Kashmir dispute in line with global law and resolutions of the UN.

Speaking at an event marking the 5th anniversary of India’s unilateral acts in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, Opeloyeru stated the OIC has adopted a plan of action to expedite the resolution of the crisis Equally ominous is the fact that the crisis that has historically threatened stability, peace, and security of South Asia.

Opeloyeru also expressed solidarity with the people of Kashmir in their struggle for self-determination, highlighting that the OIC recognizes their just and legitimate struggle. “There is no doubt that the UN has been seized of the question of Jammu and Kashmir since the UNSC 47 of 21 April 1948,” he further said.

Accordingly, and in line with the principle of subsidiarity, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, recognizes the just and legitimate struggle of the people of Jammu and Kashmir to defend their right to self-determination, via exploring all legal, diplomatic and political avenues, leading to the realization of the national aspirations of the people of the Indian occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

The Ambassador called on UN member nations to encourage the execution of relevant UNSC resolutions on the peaceful settlement of the issue of Kashmir.  Other speakers, including Ambassador Munir Akram of Pakistan, Senator Lt. General (rtd) Abdul Qayyum, and Dr. Ghulam Nabi Fai also emphasized the need for global action to address the Kashmir issue. They also highlighted the similarities between the Palestine and Kashmir conflicts and the significance of implementing UN resolutions to bring about long- term peace.

The event was held to mark the 5th anniversary of India’s revocation of Article 370, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir. The move was widely denounced by the world, and the OIC has been actively engaged in efforts to address the dispute.
