JEDDAH: The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Wednesday marked the 76th anniversary of the Nakba, a tragic event that resulted in the loss of Palestine’s land, people, and history legacy after the establishment of Israel.
The OIC condemned the crimes of genocide, ethnic cleansing, and forced displacement perpetrated by the colonial occupying power, resulting in the destruction of Palestinian villages and the suffering of its people.
The OIC stated that the repercussions of the Nakba chapters continue to unfold in an unprecedented manner through crimes of murder that led to the killings of over 35,000 Palestinians, and wounded 79,000, mostly women, children, and the elderly.
The OIC reiterated that the painful memory of past injustices remains vivid in both individual and collective Muslim ummah consciousness. This memory stands as a somber reminder of the erosion of freedom and justice, marked by human suffering, mass displacement, and the ongoing denial of the legitimate national rights of the Palestinian people.
Furthermore, the OIC called on the international community to end the Israeli occupation and to engage robustly with mechanisms of international justice to ensure accountability for the grave crimes perpetrated against humanity by the occupying power. It also underscores the imperative to address the enduring historical injustices endured by the Palestinian people.
The OIC acknowledges the vital role of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in providing essential services to the 6.5 million Palestinian refugees.
On this occasion, the OIC pays a resounding tribute to the Palestinian people who, despite the repeated chapters and repercussions of this painful Nakba over the decades, were able to continue the path of their just struggle in all its forms, in order to defend their land, the cradle of civilizations, cultures, and divine religions, and to protect their national identity, continuing their efforts to embody their freedom, independence and sovereignty over their national territory.
On this occasion, the OIC reaffirms its unwavering support for the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people, foremost of which is their right to return, and the establishment of their independent state on the borders of June 4, 1967, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital.
