JEDDAH: As the international community observes the International Day of Disabled Persons on December 3rd, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the challenges faced by disabled individuals, the Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), H. E. Mr Hiseein Brahim Taha, has called for intensified efforts towards achieving social justice for disabled persons.

The annual event, established by a United Nations resolution in 1992, aims to promote the integration of disabled individuals into society and raise awareness about the issues they face. On this occasion, Secretary-General Taha urged OIC Member States, relevant institutions, and international organizations to implement resolutions and policies focused on social justice for disabled persons. He emphasized the need for comprehensive programs to support disabled individuals and enhance awareness activities, facilitating their integration into societies.

Highlighting the resolutions adopted during the OIC ministerial conference on social development in June 2023, held in the Arab Republic of Egypt, the Secretary-General noted the encouragement for Member States to exchange experiences on integrating and rehabilitating disabled persons within their respective nations.

Secretary-General Taha drew attention to the challenging humanitarian situation faced by the Palestinian people, with a particular emphasis on the difficulties experienced by disabled individuals among them. He pointed to the repercussions of various forms of violence, including the killing of innocent children, women, the elderly, and youth, as well as the destruction of essential infrastructure in health, culture, sports, and services.

As the international community reflects on the International Day of Disabled Persons, the OIC Secretary-General’s call underscores the importance of collective efforts to address the unique challenges faced by disabled individuals and work towards a more inclusive and just society for all.
