JEDDAH: The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Sunday made an urgent request to its member countries as well as relief organizations to provide aid to the people of Afghanistan amid catastrophic flooding which has hit the country hard.
Flash floods from seasonal rains in Baghlan province in northern Afghanistan killed at least 315 people since hitting on Friday, a UN report said.
The massive rainfall caused massive flooding, affecting hundreds of families and wreaking extensive damage to infrastructure and property. The death toll from the flooding is expected to rise.
Officials said that rains also caused heavy damage in northeastern Badakhshan province and central Ghor province.
According to authorities, since mid-April, floods have killed about 100 people in ten of Afghanistan’s provinces, with no region entirely spared.
Farmland has also been affected in a country where 80 percent of the more than 40 million people depend on agriculture to survive.
