MUSCAT: Foreign minister of Oman’s on Sunday urged for de-escalation during a visit by his Iranian counterpart who kicked off a regional tour with meetings in Muscat.

During the visit Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian has met with the spokesman for Yemen’s Houthis.

The visit by the top Iranian diplomat came almost a week after an air strike in Damascus destroyed the Iranian embassy’s consular annex and further escalating tensions in the region.

The attack, killed seven Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps members including two senior commanders which Tehran blamed on Israel. Iranian leaders have vowed for retaliation.

Foreign Minister of Oman, Sayyid Badr Al-Busaidi in a statement said Oman supports efforts to reduce tension in the region, address various issues, and calls for wisdom to prevail.

Palestine a main issue

The minister said the issue of Palestine is the main issue that all nations are working to overcome.

Amir-Abdollahian during the meeting praised strong ties between Iran and Oman, thanking the country for its condemnation of the Damascus strike.

Oman is also a mediator in the war between Yemen’s Houthi rebels and Yemen’s internationally-recognized government.

Houthi have carried out dozens of missiles and drone strikes on the Red Sea shipping since November. They say they are conducting such strike in support of Palestinians in Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip.

At a joint press conference with the Houthi spokesperson, Amir-Abdollahian termed Israel’s strike a new page of this regime’s warmongering and its attempt to expand the region war.

According to Syrian media, Amir-Abdollahian will arrive in Damascus on Monday for an official visit.
