SEOUL: A man went on a “stabbing rampage” on Friday near a subway station in Seoul, South Korea, leaving one person dead and three others injured.

The attack happened close to the Sillim Subway Station in southwest Seoul, according to the police, who also announced they had apprehended the suspect. The suspect, a 30-year-old guy, wasn’t looking intoxicated. He is being interrogated about the reason behind his crime, they declared, AFP reported.

The incident occurred around 2:07 PM (05:07 GMT) close to Exit 4 of the subway station. Stretcher-wielding emergency personnel can be seen hurrying towards the event in a video uploaded to the local television station YTN’s YouTube site. The video indicated that police had used yellow tape to enclose the area. As the police arrested him, “the man shouted he didn’t want to live anymore,” according to YTN.

According to government figures, murder rates in South Korea were just 1.3 per 100,000 people in 2021, making it a usually very safe place to live. In contrast, the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention in America report 7.8 homicide deaths per 100,000 residents. Korean-language social media soon picked up on the unusual episode in Seoul.

“Don’t visit Sillim right now. A psychotic person is currently on a stabbing rampage. When I saw a person lying injured on the ground, I called the police, one Twitter user with the handle sanong cos stated.
