NEW YORK: One person was killed and five others were wounded in a shooting at a New York City subway station at the start of the evening rush hour Monday, said authorities.
The shooting broke out on an elevated train platform in the Bronx around 4:30 p.m., a time when stations across the city are full of children returning home from school and many workers begin their evening commute.
According to the police, a 30-year-old man was killed. The other four injuries were described as serious by the fire department spokesman.
Police were not immediately able to provide details about what happened, but said a search was underway for the shooter, who fled the scene.
“The train was coming and there were two kids yelling,” witness Efrain Feliciano, 61, told the Daily News. “There were at least six shots.”
“I saw sparkles as the bullets hit the wall,” Feliciano said. “A woman was holding a child screaming.”
Video showed a subway train pulling into the station and orange evidence cones on the platform, which is three stops north of Yankee Stadium. Trains were still passing through the station on the express line but were not stopping, as police investigated.
Fears of violence on the subway have risen after a series of incidents in recent years, but overall crime in New York City has fallen sharply since rising at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The number of people shot citywide last year dropped 39% compared to 2022. The number of homicides in the subway also dropped last year, from 10 to 5.
