ISTANBUL, Turkey: One person was killed and seven injured when a pillar supporting cable cars collapsed in southern Turkey on Friday.
The accident happened outside the Turkish resort city of Antalya, authorities said.
Antalya mayor Muhittin Bocek in a statement said that helicopters equipped with night vision were called in to rescue 184 people still stranded in the cable car system’s cabins.
“Our specialised teams are here. God willing, we will rescue them all in a short time,” Bocek added.
According to Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, the accident occurred when one of the cabins in the cable car system at SarisuTunektepe plunged into a rocky area as the tower collapsed.
Five people had been evacuated by helicopter, while two were still waiting to be moved, he said on X.
As many as 110 emergency personnel had been dispatched to the site of the collapse, Yerlikaya added with more specialist mountaineers being flown in from elsewhere in the country.
Chairman of the opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), Ozgur Ozel, a group of 10 opposition MPs were also headed to the scene to “investigate the accident in detail, he added.
