NEW YORK: OpenAI’s ChatGPT is on the verge of a significant update that will bring voice capabilities to the viral chatbot, allowing it to engage in voice conversations with users and interact using images. This advancement places ChatGPT in closer competition with popular artificial intelligence (AI) assistants like Apple’s Siri.

OpenAI described the introduction of the voice feature as a development that “opens doors to many creative and accessibility-focused applications,” according to a blog post released on Monday.

AI services like Siri, Google’s voice assistant, and Amazon’s Alexa are typically integrated with the devices they operate on, serving functions such as setting alarms, providing reminders, and delivering internet-based information.

ChatGPT Found Applications in Various Industries

Since its debut last year, ChatGPT has found applications in various industries, from summarizing documents to generating computer code, sparking a competitive race among major tech companies to launch their own offerings based on generative AI.

With the addition of voice capabilities, the new ChatGPT feature will enable tasks such as narrating bedtime stories, resolving dinner table debates, and verbally articulating text input from users.

OpenAI’s technology is already being utilized by Spotify to assist podcasters in translating their content into different languages, further showcasing the versatility and practical applications of ChatGPT’s advancements.

Moreover, the update introduces support for images, allowing users to capture images of objects or scenes around them and request the chatbot’s assistance in troubleshooting issues like a malfunctioning grill, planning a meal based on fridge contents, or analyzing complex graphs for work-related data.

As for retrieving information from images, Alphabet’s Google Lens currently holds a prominent position in the market. OpenAI plans to roll out these new ChatGPT features to subscribers of its Plus and Enterprise plans within the next two weeks, offering a broader range of tools and capabilities for users to interact with and leverage the power of artificial intelligence in various aspects of their lives.
