Oscar Nominee Dame Joan Plowright Dies at 95

LONDON: Dame Joan Plowright, an Oscar nominee and one of Britain’s most celebrated actors has died at the age of 95.

As per the statement released by her family in Friday, Dame was surrounded by her family during her final time.

“It is with great sadness that the family of Dame Joan Plowright, the Lady Olivier, inform you that she passed away peacefully on January 16 2025 surrounded by her family at Denville Hall aged 95,” Dame’s family stated.

“She enjoyed a long and illustrious career across theatre, film and TV over seven decades until blindness made her retire. She cherished her last 10 years in Sussex with constant visits from friends and family, filled with much laughter and fond memories,” said the statement.

“She survived her many challenges with Plowright grit and courageous determination to make the best of them, and that she certainly did. Rest in peace, Joan..,” the family added.

The actress had a career that spanned over seven decades, with her most renowned work in theatre, where she also performed alongside her husband, the legendary actor Laurence Olivier.

Her film career included a notable role in Enchanted April (1991), which earned her an Academy Award nomination. In 1992, she won two Golden Globe Awards in a single night for her performances in Stalin and Enchanted April.

Dame is survived by three children, all of whom pursued careers in the arts.
