Over 160 People Killed in Kinshasa Floods in DR Congo

Kinshasa: Over 160 people were killed in the worst floods in DR Congo’s capital Kinshasa after heavy rainfall.

UN officials on Friday said that roads in Kinshasa were submerged for hours, and a leading key supply route to Matadi also collapsed.

The concerned authorities reported that in recent floods, at least 169 people have lost their lives while the injured were getting medical assistance. The UN office of humanitarian affairs said at least 280 houses have been destroyed.

The DR Congo Prime Minister’s office put the deaths at 120 on Tuesday.

In the capital’s west, the Mont-Ngaliema districts was the worst hit by torrential rains, and OCHA said that about 38,000 people had been affected in these districts.

DR Congo’s capital, located on the Congo River, has recently seen tremendous population growth, and houses have been built on flood-prone slopes. This city also has inadequate sewerage and drainage system.

National mourning for three days has also been observed since Wednesday.
