PORT MORESBY: Reports from Papua New Guinea indicate that at least 26 people have been killed in tribal fighting in the northern highlands, Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) reported on Monday citing sources. The violence erupted in Enga Province, with an ambush resulting in the tragic loss of lives.

The incident, reported by the local newspaper the Post-Courier, occurred on Sunday and is believed to stem from a longstanding conflict between two tribal groups. Initially, local police had estimated a higher death toll of 53, before revising it down to 26. However, the exact number of casualties remains unverified.

George Kakas, a senior officer in Papua New Guinea’s police force, described the widespread nature of the violence, stating, “These tribesmen have been killed all over the countryside, all over the bush.” Both police and defense forces have been mobilized to contain the situation, despite the inherent risks involved.

Tribal Clashes in Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea, a nation characterized by its diverse tribal communities, often grapples with violence arising from inter-tribal disputes, exacerbated by the challenging terrain of the region. ABC notes that this recent bout of violence involves the same tribes implicated in clashes that claimed 60 lives in Enga Province last year.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed deep concern over the situation, emphasizing Australia’s commitment to supporting Papua New Guinea in addressing security challenges. He highlighted ongoing efforts to provide substantial support, particularly in training police officers and enhancing security measures in the country.
