NEW DELHI: Severe flooding caused by torrential rains across three Indian states has killed over 60 people, with Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana bearing the brunt of the disaster, officials said on Monday. The heavy rainfall, which began on August 27, has resulted in devastating flooding, causing widespread destruction.
In Gujarat, the hardest-hit state, over 45 fatalities have been reported. The state’s infrastructure has been severely impacted, with many areas submerged under water. The Indian Army has been deployed to Gujarat, equipped with specialized rescue equipment and personnel working around the clock to assist in the evacuation and relief operations.
In Andhra Pradesh, heavy rains have resulted in at least 10 deaths. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has ordered to accelerate relief efforts and has called upon residents to show resilience in the face of the disaster.

Telangana has also experienced significant flooding, with nine reported deaths. In response, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has announced a financial assistance package of 500,000 Indian Rupees (approximately $5,960) for the families of those who have lost their lives. Reddy has also urged the central government to declare the disaster a “national calamity” to facilitate more extensive support for the affected regions.
Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi extended his condolences to the victims’ families and urged Congress leaders and party workers to mobilize resources for ongoing relief and rescue operations. “I urge Congress leaders and workers to mobilise all available resources to support the ongoing relief and rescue efforts,” Gandhi wrote on X.
The flooding has led to widespread disruption, with homes and infrastructure damaged, and essential services interrupted. The Indian Meteorological Department has warned that heavy rains may continue in the coming days.
