Over 700 Fresh Covid Cases, Six Deaths Reported in India in Last 24 Hours

ISLAMABAD: A recent flow of 702 fresh Covid-19 cases that led to six deaths during the last 24 hours across India, reported by local media quoting figures from the Indian health ministry on Thursday.

After the recent updates, the total number of fresh cases reached at 4,097 amid growing concerns about the new Covid variant called JN.1. The new variant was first reported in New Delhi on Wednesday according to the officials from the Indian Health Ministry.

Among the recent deaths, two were reported in Maharashtra, and one each in Karnataka, Kerala, West Bengal and New Delhi during last 24 hours.

New Variant of Covid-19

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), JN.1 is a sub-lineage of the Omicron variant and has been identified as the most rampant strain in the US, accounting for over 44 percent of cases there.

Meanwhile, the officials in India are closely monitoring the resurrection of cases in the country after the JN.1 variant was detected across several states, with the emergence of 109 new cases as of December 26.

The states of Gujarat and Karnataka have the highest number of cases, with 36 and 34, respectively, followed by Goa, Maharashtra, Kerala, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana.

Experts warn about the JN.1 variant, calling it highly transmissible with mild symptoms similar to a common cold as the primary causes while affecting the upper respiratory tract. Masses are advised to take precautionary measures as much as they can.
