ISLAMABAD: Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner Admiral (R) Ravindra C Wijegunaratne on Tuesday underscored Pakistan’s significant economic advancements tied to CPEC and the operationalization of Gwadar Port.
He reaffirmed his country’s dedication to strengthening diplomatic, economic, and cultural relations with Pakistan, emphasizing the importance of long-term policies aimed at youth development, agriculture, and water security for sustained growth.
Highlighting Sri Lanka’s commitment to enhancing ties across various sectors including trade, tourism, and defense, Admiral Wijegunaratne emphasized Sri Lanka’s role as a vital international transhipment hub. He anticipated that Gwadar Port’s full operationalization would open substantial revenue opportunities for Pakistan, particularly in transit trade to Central Asian Republics.
Recalling the historical camaraderie between Sri Lanka and Pakistan, Admiral Wijegunaratne praised Pakistan’s support during critical times, such as logistical assistance during the 1971 war and aid in countering insurgency. He noted the annual bilateral trade volume nearing one billion dollars with potential for growth, highlighting challenges in air connectivity hindering tourism expansion.
Admiral Ravindra also discussed educational and cultural exchanges, mentioning initiatives like the Allama Iqbal Scholarship for Sri Lankan students and Sri Lanka’s interest in religious education collaboration. He praised Pakistan’s cultural efforts, like hosting the Gandhara Culture Symposium, to strengthen ties and promote mutual understanding.
Looking ahead, Admiral Wijegunaratne addressed Sri Lanka’s post-COVID-19 economic recovery efforts, focusing on tourism revitalization and agricultural productivity enhancement.
He suggested Pakistan negotiate debt restructuring and tap into its diaspora to bolster foreign reserves. Highlighting climate change as a regional threat, he commended Pakistan’s initiatives on water security and stressed environmental sustainability.
Admiral Wijegunaratne expressed optimism for deeper Pakistan-Sri Lanka economic integration and enhanced cooperation in global forums. He reiterated Sri Lanka’s commitment to advancing diplomatic, economic, and cultural relations with Pakistan, emphasizing mutual benefits and strategic partnerships.
