ISLAMABAD: The Climate Change Minister of Pakistan, Sherry Rehman, has warned the public and relevant authorities, including non-governmental organizations (NGOs), as heavy rains accompanied by thundershowers are expected to hit Pakistan within the next 24-48 hours.

Minister Rehman took to Twitter to highlight the forecasted rainfall impacts, emphasizing that Punjab’s cities like Lahore, Narowal, and Sialkot are likely to experience the highest amount of rainfall. Other provinces have also been put on alert for heavy to moderate rain.

Urban flooding alerts have been issued for cities and municipal areas, with a risk of landslides. Minister Rehman stressed the importance of coordinated preparedness and proactive responses to save lives. She called on all response teams, both public and NGOs in the affected areas, to remain vigilant and ready.

Heavy Rains Expected in Several Areas of Pakistan

According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall are expected in north/northeastern Punjab, including Lahore, Sialkot, and Narowal. Additionally, high or very high river flows are anticipated in Ravi, Chenab, Sutlej, and associated Nullahs, such as Aik, Deg, Bhimber, Palkhu, and Basanter. This weather condition may result in urban flooding in municipal areas and landslides in hilly regions, as warned by the NDMA.

In other parts of the country, including Karachi, Tharparkar, Sukkur, Larkana, Hyderabad, Badin, Shaheed Benazirabad, northeastern Balochistan, and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, thunderstorms and heavy rainfall are also expected.

The NDMA has issued guidelines for the district and city administrations to ensure contingency traffic plans for areas vulnerable to flash flooding in urban centers and immediate de-watering operations in flooded underpasses. NDMA advised the district administrations to complete reconnaissance, stock-taking, and public awareness in flood vulnerable areas. Additionally, rescue services and leading NGOs are urged to deploy personnel in the indicated areas. The NDMA emphasized the importance of proactive coordination among all stakeholders to ensure a prompt and streamlined response to the situation.

As Pakistan braces for the heavy rains and thunderstorms, it is crucial for the public and authorities to remain vigilant, follow safety guidelines, and take necessary precautions to minimize the potential risks associated with the anticipated weather conditions.
