ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Caretaker Foreign Minister Jalil Abbas Jilani urged the international community, particularly the United Nations, on Friday to fulfill their commitments and take immediate measures to facilitate the people of Indian illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) in exercising their right to self-determination.

In his statement on the occasion of Right to Self-Determination Day, FM Jilani emphasized the need for an urgent halt to human rights violations and the restoration of the rights and fundamental freedoms of the Kashmiri people. He said that right to self-determination of the Kashmiri people enshrined in the United Nations Security Council resolutions.

He noted that January 5th is annually observed as the Right to Self-Determination Day for the people of Jammu and Kashmir, marking the adoption of a resolution by the United Nations Commission for India and Pakistan (UNCIP) in 1949.

Highlighting the significance of the right to self-determination as a fundamental principle of international law, FM Jilani pointed out that the UN General Assembly reaffirms this right every year, expressing unwavering support for people under foreign occupation. Unfortunately, the Kashmiri people have been unable to exercise this inherent right.

FM Jilani raised concerns about India’s efforts to solidify its occupation of the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), a globally recognized disputed territory. He criticized India’s actions since August 5, 2019, aimed at demographic and political changes, suppressing the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination. The recent verdict by the Indian Supreme Court was cited as another manifestation of India’s attempt to undermine this right.
