UNITED NATIONS: A senior Pakistani diplomat emphasized the need for increased transparency and inclusivity within the Security Council to effectively address global and regional conflicts and crises. Ambassador Usman Jadoon, Pakistan’s deputy permanent representative to the UN, stressed the importance of implementing resolutions, especially concerning longstanding disputes.
Ambassador Jadoon criticized the selective implementation of Security Council resolutions, stating that it undermines the council’s credibility. He called for decisive action and improved working methods to uphold the council’s responsibilities under the UN Charter.
Highlighting areas for improvement, the Pakistani envoy emphasized the importance of openness, transparency, and accountability in the council’s operations. He suggested reforms such as holding interactive discussions in open meetings, enhancing reporting to the General Assembly, and allowing non-Council members to participate in deliberations upon request.
Ambassador Jadoon also advocated for the elimination or reform of the “penholder” system to ensure fairness and inclusivity. He underscored the General Assembly’s role as the primary deliberative and policy-making organ of the UN.
