ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is closely monitoring the security situation in Sudan, where fighting between the regular army and paramilitaries has escalated in the capital city of Khartoum.

In a statement released on Saturday, the Foreign Office spokesperson said that there are around a thousand Pakistani nationals in Khartoum and that the Pakistan Mission is in contact with them to ensure their safety.

The fighting in Sudan has prompted Volker Perthes, the head of the UN mission in Sudan, to call for an “immediate” end to the violence. Perthes “strongly condemns the fighting in Sudan,” according to a statement from the UN.

He has reached out to both parties asking for an immediate cessation of fighting to ensure the Sudanese people’s safety and to prevent the country from further violence.

Sudan’s air force struck paramilitary bases

Sudan’s air force struck several paramilitary bases in Khartoum on Saturday, according to the army. The violence has been ongoing between the rival security forces and has resulted in multiple casualties.

Pakistan and Sudan share the same religion and historical baggage of colonial rule. Both countries are members of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the Group of 77 in the United Nations.

As such, Pakistan has expressed concern over the safety of its citizens in Sudan and is working to ensure their well-being.

The situation in Sudan remains tense, with the UN calling for an immediate end to the violence. Pakistan continues to monitor the situation closely and will take necessary steps to protect its citizens in Sudan.

The international community is also being urged to take action to help bring an end to the violence and ensure the safety of the Sudanese people.
